The Origins of Fin Rock™

As a financial advisor by day, I noticed that many people find finance overwhelming, confusing and boring.

And when we feel like that, it’s common for us to stick our heads in the sand in order to avoid facing our finances at all.

I thought, “So many of us are like ostriches — financial ostriches!”

Then I went on a writing retreat, and I decided to write about this idea. An essay on this seemed daunting, but a song…that might be FUN. So I started humming and sketching what would eventually become “Are you a financial ostrich too?”

Little did I know that the joy of writing and singing this song would inspire a new musical project that I would affectionately call “Fin Rock.”

Just three months later I performed an entire concert of financial rock songs with a full rock band (and even some colorful powerpoint slides :)) to a full house of professional investors, CPAs, business people, folks from my creative writing community, and even some of our clients at Created.

I’ll never forget the joy of seeing a business owner ring the “Fin Rock cowbell” or the CFO of an investment fund harmonizing along with the band.

But what surprised me the most was hearing from members of this diverse audience that the songs had inspired true reflection about their own relationships to finance.

And so when I was given the opportunity to speak about financial education at a TEDx conference, I knew I had to kick it off by melting their faces with some practical financial guidance :)
